October 2026 Reads
For generations, the Haddesley family has lived isolated on a cranberry bog in West Virginia, tied to the land by a very specific, supernatural pact: when the head of the family dies, his body is sacrificed to the peat bog. In return, the bog gives them a "bog-wife"—a strange, non-human woman birthed straight from the earth—to marry the eldest son and keep the family line going.
When the family patriarch dies, his five children bury him in the peat to fulfill their end of the bargain. But then... nothing happens. The ritual fails, and the bog completely refuses to give them a bride.
Thoughts | Possible Spoilers
Loved. Loved. Loved this book. From the very first few pages, I was completely hooked, and that hold didn’t loosen for a single second until I turned the final page. The eerie storyline, the utter strangeness woven throughout the entire narrative, the unsettling questions it leaves echoing in your mind, and that ending… omg.
I was genuinely shocked by how everything resolved. Wennas' choice to surrender to the land and become one with it alongside the rest of her family was as heartbreaking as it was surreal. On the flip side, Charlie’s decision to actually walk away—to choose the unknown and attempt a "normal" life after everything—felt like such a stark, unexpected contrast.
The atmosphere, the character choices, and the sheer weirdness of the world made this such an unforgettable read. It was truly so well written, and I know these characters and that ending are going to stick with me for a really long time.
Overall, I would recommend The Bog Wife to anyone who loves a good, spooky storyline without the typical paranormal twist—it hits such a unique, unsettling sweet spot.
